After a dreary international break, the Premier League is back!
All 20 top-tier sides are in action this weekend in what promises to be another thrilling round of domestic matches.
Michael Owen, the former Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Newcastle United striker has given his latest set of predictions ahead of the matches.
The pick of the weekend’s fixtures sees title holders Liverpool face bitter local rivals and early Premier League leaders Everton at Goodison Park.
Former Liverpool man Owen is backing his old side to emerge victorious in a 2-1 win.
‘This is the most anticipated Merseyside Derby in many a year,’ Owen told Bet Victor.
‘Who would’ve predicted out of the two sides that it would be Everton that go into the match with a 100% record?
‘They have had some start, while Liverpool have had two weeks to lick their wounds after their 7-2 loss to Aston Villa.
‘Will we see reaction? I think so. This could be a classic, and I’m taking the Reds to edge it in a close run match.’
The weekend’s other headline game sees Manchester City host Arsenal at the Etihad and Owen is backing Pep Guardiola’s side to get three points.
‘The glamour fixture on Sunday is at the Etihad,’ said Owen. ‘Arsenal make the visit to Manchester with their tails up. It’s been a pretty solid start from the Gunners, and they will go here with high hopes of taking something.
‘City simply need to pick up, and back on home soil I can see Pep rallying his troops to claim the points.’
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge – a match Owen expects them to win 3-1.
‘Chelsea are starting to click,’ said Owen. ‘Their 4-0 win against Crystal Palace two weeks ago was their best performance of the season so far, and I fear a bit for goal-shy Southampton here.
Michael Owen’s Premier League predictions
Everton 1-2 Liverpool
Chelsea 3-1 Southampton
Leicester 2-2 Aston Villa
Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd
Sheff Utd 1-0 Fulham
West Brom 0-1 Burnley
Man City 3-1 Arsenal
Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton
Spurs 1-1 West Ham
Leeds 2-1 Wolves
‘I expect the Blues to have too much fire power, and despite lingering concerns regarding their back-line, I fancy them to take the points.’
Two of Owen’s former clubs will go head-to-head on Saturday night, with Manchester United travelling up to Newcastle.
‘Newcastle will be more than happy with their start to their campaign,’ added Owen.
‘A 3-1 victory at home to Burnley was a solid enough performance, and I think the Magpies will quietly fancy their chances here.
‘United come into this in disarray. The result against Tottenham won’t be forgotten quickly and I think it may take a few weeks yet for United to find their feet. I’m going for a draw.’
In the round’s other fixtures, Owen is tipping Leeds to beat Wolves and Sheffield United and Burnley to take three points off newly-promoted Fulham and West Broom respectively.
He’s gone for draws in clashes between Spurs and West Ham, Aston Villa and Leicester and Crystal Palace against Brighton.
