Paris Saint-Germain star Leandro Paredes has urged Lionel Messi to join the Ligue 1 giants after Neymar admitted he was desperate to be reunited with his former Barcelona team-mate.
Messi capped a tumultuous summer for the Catalan giants by handing in a transfer request following a series of dismal results, culminating in the historic 8-2 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich, and a spectacular falling out with the club’s hierarchy.
The 33-year-old was eventually forced to perform a U-turn after the club he has served for the entirety of his professional career refused to sanction his request, while Messi was unwilling to enter into a protracted legal battle.
With his contract due to expire in six months’ time and Barcelona in a dire financial position, Messi’s future is again a matter of intense speculation and he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another European club as of next month.
The likes of PSG and Manchester City represent the two most feasible options for the Barcelona talisman, given their financial might, and Messi’s fellow Argentine Paredes insists his compatriot would be welcome in the French capital.
He told ESPN: ‘Messi at PSG? I hope so, we all want him to come but it will be his decision. We have an incredible squad, good players, good people, we take advantage of that.
‘As I have said, I hope Leo will make the best decision for him, but we will welcome him with open arms.’
Neymar, meanwhile, made his comments on teaming up with Messi again following the decisive role he played in PSG’s 3-1 win over Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Brazil international left Camp Nou in acrimonious circumstances back in the summer of 2017 and although several potential presidential candidates have outlined their intentions to bring him back to Barcelona, he now appears settled at PSG.
Speaking after last night’s game he said: ‘What I want most is to play with [Messi] again, to be able to enjoy being on the pitch with him again.
‘He could play in my place. He won’t have any problems, I’m sure. I want to play with him again and I’m sure that, next season, we have to do it.’
