Why Man Utd have walked away from ‘clusterf**k’ Moises Caicedo deal

Manchester United have firmly closed the door on signing Moises Caicedo this month having become exasperated by negotiations for the Ecuador midfielder, according to reports.

The Red Devils were in talks to sign the highly rated 19-year-old from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle – for whom he has made 31 appearances and scored six goals – for a fee of around £5.5million.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, United have now walked away from the deal after it became ‘too messy’ to complete.

As is often the case with South American transfers, there are a host of intermediaries and third parties involved and the negotiations have been described as a ‘clustef**k’.

The young midfielder is said to be desperate to move to the Premier League – and particularly Old Trafford – and has enlisted the help of anyone who promised to help him engineer a move to England, meaning there are a host of agents now involved in the deal.

Despite United’s reluctance to engage in such a complicated discussion, other Premier League sides have not been put off.

West Ham, Newcastle and Everton are all keen on the all-action midfielder but it is Brighton who look set to seal his transfer, assuming they can overcome the difficulties that United found so frustrating.

One advantage for Brighton is that they have retained a good relationship with Independiente del Valle since signing Billy Arce in 2018 and have a become increasingly astute at spotting and signing South American talents.

Caicedo only turned 19 a few months ago but already has four caps for Ecuador and became the first player born after the 21st century to score in a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier when he netted against Uruguay in a 4-2 win.

The Independiente del Valle star is a box-to-box midfielder who has mixed his defensive qualities and tenacity with creativity and an eye for goal and is considered a massive talent.
