Arsenal unlikely to land top target in January to replace transfer flop

Arsenal are ready to ditch backup goalkeeper Alex Runarsson after just four months at the club but are concerned they won’t be able to land their top target to replace him in January.

The Gunners are actively trying to ship out the Iceland international on loan after a string of disastrous displays in goal.

Runarsson was signed to replace Emiliano Martinez, who moved to Aston Villa in the summer and has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers since.

While Martinez played a key role in helping Arsenal win the FA Cup and Community Shield, Runarsson has struggled to fill those boots when he has replaced Bernd Leno in the side.

He was guilty of an error-strewn display against Manchester City as Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup and club chiefs now want him to leave on loan.

Runarsson can only leave if a replacement is found and Arsenal are worried their top target, Brentford goalkeeper David Raya is unattainable this month, according to The Sun.

Raya was Arsenal’s top goalkeeping target in the summer ahead of Runarsson, who was signed for £1million from Rennes, and has since put pen to paper on a new deal at Brentford, which will make a move hard to complete.

The Spanish goalkeeper was personally recommended to Mikel Arteta by goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, having worked with Raya during his spell at Brentford.

A £10m bid was rejected in the summer and the 25-year-old may prove even tougher to land now.

Runarsson will only be allowed to leave if a replacement is found as they are not as well stocked in that department after Matt Macey joined Hibs last week.
